Organizing Closets and the Mudroom.
Keeping your Closets Tidy
No house has enough closet space for everything you need to
store, everybody collects junk and never seems to get rid of
it. This means that we all tend to have closets almost at
bursting point! The first thing you should do is tidy your
closets out, decide what you don’t want to keep. If it’s worth
selling then sell it, otherwise throw it away.
Don’t go over the top, make sure you just concentrate on one
closet at a time. Clear out the closet so that it’s empty, then
start putting things back. Make a list of everything you have
and work out where it will permanently live. You should locate
these things into closets so that they are easy to hand.
You should then take a look at the different storage options
that are around, work out which options would work well in your
case. You could use a shelf fixed to the wall, or a moveable
shelf. You may find out that plastic boxes are very useful to
help organize your closet.
The mudroom gets a lot of use every day, lots of people in the
house will walk through here. It’s quite normal for mud rooms
to be a junk magnet, you may well find all of your winter
coats, toys and sports equipment make themselves at home in
your mudroom. To help this fit lots of different hooks to help
store everything. A boot pad is a great idea to keep your boots
out of the way.
Store all of your tools in a rack, you can hang up shovels on
the wall which makes them easy to get at, and also keeps them
out of the way. You could keep smaller hand tools in a basket
which can be carried out to the garden should you need
them.
If your mud room is big enough you could create an individual
space for each person in your family. This allows them to have
a small amount of their own storage space.
